Peer-to-peer marketplaces offer tremendous savings, but completing in-person exchanges requires smart precautions to protect your personal safety and finances.
1. Always Meet in Daylight in Monitored Public Locations
Never invite strangers to your home for easily portable high-value items (smartphones, jewelry, designer gear). Choose a busy bank lobby, well-lit coffee shop, or designated police station “Safe Exchange Zone” equipped with active CCTV.
2. Bring a Friend or Family Member
Two people are significantly less likely to be targeted by opportunists than an unaccompanied individual. Having a companion also gives you an extra set of eyes to inspect goods while you converse.
3. Thoroughly Inspect and Test Before Handing Over Funds
Never hand over cash or initiate an instant transfer until you have held the item, powered it on, tested all buttons, cameras, and connectivity, and verified serial numbers against documentation.
4. Beware of Counterfeit Payment Apps and Fake Wire Receipts
One of the fastest-growing marketplace scams involves buyers showing a fake banking app screenshot claiming “the transfer was initiated.” Never release an item until the funds actually show as cleared in your own bank account.
5. Keep Communication on the Platform
Legitimate buyers and sellers have no issue communicating through the marketplace messaging interface. Scammers immediately attempt to move you to WhatsApp, SMS, or Telegram to evade fraud filters.
