VAT Calculator
Easily add or exclude Value Added Tax (VAT) with flexible presets (20%, 5.5%, 10%, 19%, 21%).
Understanding the VAT Calculator
Value Added Tax (VAT) applies to commercial sales and professional services across the UK and European Union. Whether you are pricing goods gross (inclusive of VAT) or net (exclusive of VAT), this tool provides accurate conversions.
How to Use This Tool
Enter the amount, select your VAT rate preset (or input a custom percentage), and choose whether you want to Add VAT to a net amount or Remove VAT from a gross amount.
Calculation Methodology & Formula
The underlying calculation applies the following deterministic mathematical logic:
Add VAT: Gross = Net × (1 + Rate/100), VAT Amount = Gross - Net. Remove VAT: Net = Gross / (1 + Rate/100), VAT Amount = Gross - Net.
Practical Classifieds Example
Real-World Scenario: A net price of €500 with standard 20% VAT yields €100 in tax for a gross total of €600. Removing 20% VAT from €600 correctly returns €500 net (not €480).
Important Limitations & Assumptions
VAT Calculator FAQs
Private individuals selling their own pre-owned belongings generally do not charge or collect VAT. Registered business sellers must comply with local tax rules.
Because VAT is calculated as 20% of the net base, not 20% of the gross total. To remove VAT, you must divide by 1.20.
Yes. Choose any standard preset or type your custom tax percentage into the input field.
